Live-sampling-beat-pilot toktek (Tom Verbruggen) battles it out with instrument builder & drummer Simon Berz in an energetic session. Over the years, toktek has mastered the art of sampling anything that makes sound and playing them through his flight simulation controllers. Berz’s handmade drum synth system allows for him to play his electronics directly through the drumkit.
Nothing is more entertaining than watching toktek build his palette of sounds from random musical objects and then blissfully play them on his controller. He’s like a modern day Robinson Crusoe enjoying his castaway life in electronic music wonderland. Toktek has been a loyal user of STEIM’s vintage software LiSa and till this day still surprises the original inventors on how he has mastered it. It all makes sense for him to team up with Simon Berz who is no stranger to electronics and chaos.
Drummer and sound artist Simon Berz creates unique beat / noise generator instruments from everyday objects – desk lamps, his grandfather’s razors or miscellaneous kitchenware – with auditory associations from his childhood. The objects and their interaction through light, induction or vibration provide the compositional framework for his free improvisational performances. His collaborations span from Lee “Scratch” Perry to Paul Lovens and Pfadfinderei.
